5. I think this book is reflects events in history very well. The great depression was a time when there were hundreds of thousands of people trying to get jobs, and they were doing anything to get them. Along with doing anything to get them, they took very low wages. Many people got by on the very bare minimum. One of the main social issues in the book the abuse of power. Time and time again in the book a person in authority would belittle others because they were less fortunate then them. One thing that stood out to me especially was the policemen. Anytime they didn’t like something they would arrest the person they thought had wronged him. They would put the person in jail with little or no reason, besides the fact they didn’t like them. Another issue was that the bankers who owned the farmers land had no regard for the people who farmed them. Even though they may have missed a few payments on the land, I think that having compassion on someone has a much better effect in the long run. I know that the bankers just wanted more money, but helping human beings survive would be much more rewarding. This is not just a story of survival it is a story of desperation. The Joad family, and many other families like them did almost anything to survive. They worked at jobs that provided little money. Many times when they ran out of money, the Joad family would go without food. They were more fortunate than others however, they didn’t starve to death. The business men and land owners didn’t care about their workers and how they would survive or how they would feed their families. The only thing that they care about was when their crops would get harvested. That’s what drove the bitterness between the workers and the owners. There was no sense of morality or compassion. All they cared about was money.
