18. One of the lesser important characters in this book was Rose of Sharon. Even though she is not as important, she still played a vital role in The Grapes of Wraths. Rose and her husband Connie had come on the journey because they were afraid of being separated from Rose’s family. I also think it was because they did not know what else to do. I did not like Rose of Sharon because she was always complaining. Whenever there was something she did not like, she would complain about it. Rose would blame it on her pregnancy, and I times it have been, but I think she enjoyed complaining. She had no problem telling someone she did not like something. When Connie left, all she did was cry. She pouted and wanted the rest of the family to feel sorry for her. It was as if she did not realize that the family was struggling to survive. When they went to the government camp, and the over religious lady talked to her, Rose of Sharon freaked out. She thought she had killed her baby because she had danced with Connie. After that she thought that every bad thing that happened would affect her baby and make it a bad baby. Rose of Sharon enjoyed having the attention on her. When Winfield became sick and needed milk, Rose of Sharon complained that she was not getting any milk for her baby. She thought she was the most important person in the group. Rose of Sharon was little help her mother, and when she did help Ma had to constantly reminder her to keep working. Rose would always say she was tired and needed to lie down. She also believed that Connie would come back to her; she was very naïve in thinking he would come back. When Rose of Sharon wanted to help her family harvest the cotton, Rose may have been trying to help, but I think it was to draw attention to herself. Then she became sick and was little help to anyone. And when it came time for her to have her baby she had little strength. Rose was never thinking of others, but always of herself.
