2. To me it does not seem like there are many gains in this book for the old man. The only one I can think of would be that he had the satisfaction to say that he hooked the big fish. There are however many loses that were visible to me in this book for the old man. He had gone eighty four straight days without catching one fish, right there is a loss of pride and respect as a fisherman. On the eighty fifth day he was out at sea most of the day when he finally caught The Big Fish, and he was out there two more days. He suffered cuts to his hands and cramps as well. The old man had the strain of the line across his back and shoulders. The big fish pulled him far out to sea. He had to cut his other line and let it go so that he could pay attention to the big fish. He endured two nights with no sleep, eating one raw fish a day. He waited hours for the fish to circle and grow weary. When the old man finally had pulled the fish in, he realized that he could not put the fish in his boat so he had to lash it to the side. There was conflict between the old man and the sharks that were following the boat to get a taste of that huge fish. The old man broke every weapon he had attempting to fend off the attacking sharks that were trying to ruin the hard, dedicated work of the old man. On his way back the sharks ate everything off the fish accept his head and his tail. When the old man finally returned home it is at night and he leaves his boat and his fish in the water because he is heartbroken. All his hard work for the past three days was ruined by those murderous sharks. One gain is that everyone was amazed at the sight of this huge fish and the old man gained more respect from the fisherman.
