16. Winfield and Ruthie were classic adolescent sibling characters. They were always messing around, and finding ways to get in trouble. They constantly found something to argue about or to aggravate the other person. When the Joad family was traveling they would whine and complain about anything they could. They would whine that they were thirsty or hungry. When the family stopped to camp for the night, they would run off and play not helping the family. They would always tell on the other. Even if it was not a big deal, they wanted the other to get in trouble. When the Joad family stopped at the river before they crossed the desert you could tell that Winfield and Ruthie were getting on everyone’s nerves. It was like everyone wanted them to be more mature then they really were. They never thought of others. The only thought s they had were for their own well being or enjoyment. At the Hoovervill camp they were stuck up because they had food to eat and the other children did not. They were showing off to the other children. They did not know that in a few weeks they would be the exact same as the other children. When they were in the government camp they were very mischievous and curious. They went into the sanitary station and were amazed at the toilets. They had never seen a toilet before so when Winfield flushed it, he thought he had broken it. Ruthie knew that this was the perfect thing to tell on Winfield for, but she did not know that her plan would backfire. Ma told them that is what a toilet did. Ruthie was a brat, when she wanted something she had to have it. When the kids were playing croquet Ruthie thought she could just march in and take over. She did not realize that the other kids would not be so willing to give up their club. When she finally got the club no one else would play with her so she went and cried so the other kids would feel sorry for her. I think she felt sorry for herself.
